Happiness of Pokémon
Every Pokémon has an opinion of it's trainer, whether it be good or bad. A Pokémon's happiness can effect what it does in battle. For example, if a Pokémon has a very low happiness it might disobey it's trainer, or try to run away. However, if a Pokémon has a high happiness it will try as hard as it can to win the battle. In some rare cases a Pokémon may even evolve if it's happiness is high enough.
To fairly judge a Pokémon's happiness every one has a happiness score. A Pokémon's happiness is gauged on a scale of -15 to +15. All freshly caught Pokémon start out with a happiness score of 0, seeing as they have no opinion of you yet. Also, all Pokémon that have already been caught, but have not received a happiness score, will start at 0.
Raising a Pokémon's happiness score is fairly easy: participate in a battle and win. If a Pokémon took part in a battle, even if it was just for one turn, the Pokémon and trainer will have bonded slightly so its Happiness will go up by +1. There are also some items that help gain Happiness (and are listed further down the page).
There are multiple ways they can lose Happiness. If you, as a trainer, were to treat your Pokémon badly (like screaming abuse at it or sending it out into an unwinnable battle), it will begin to lose Happiness at the moderator's discretion. Linking into this, if a Pokémon faints in battle it will lose 1 Happiness. The final thing to cause Happiness depletion is an Herb. These are also listed further down the page.
